(September 5, 2013) Hundreds gathered today at the official opening and dedication ceremony for Powers High School in Flint, MI. The event marks the completion of the renovated Historic Fey Hall and the addition of an 80,000 square foot library. Developers, donors, local officials as well as students and staff gathered this morning at the main building entrance to cut the ribbon and officially open the new facility for the 2013-2014 school year.
Flint Mayor Dayne Walling considers Powers High School a major success in the battle to restore Flint. The school will bring high quality education to an area in need. Enrollment at Powers High School has significantly improved since last year with 545 students enrolled at the new facility.
The National Development Council’s $11 million Qualified Equity Investment in the $20.6 million project was combined with financing and NMTC allocation from Chase Bank, resulting in the creation of 180 construction jobs and 60 permanent jobs. The project is in a low-income community and is considered a Brownfield Revitalization area as well as a local TIF and Enterprise zone.
